General Objectives:

Wie geht’s focuses on the essential elements of effective communication.  By the end of the course, the students should have acquired a degree of competence in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and gained insights into life the German-speaking countries.  The students should be able to understand German that is spoken at moderate conversational speed and that deals with everyday topics.  Wie geht’s presents numerous opportunities for enhancing the students’ listening skills.  Students should be able to engage in simple conversations with speakers of German in everyday situations.  They are encouraged to express themselves in German.   Students should be able to read non-technical German of moderate difficulty on various aspects of German culture. Students should be able to write simple sentences correctly on topics presented in the text.  Students should also acquire basic knowledge about the countries where German is spoken and become aware of essential differences and similarities between these countries and the U.S.

The organizing principle is proficiency.  The guidelines developed by ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and the U.S. government evaluate levels of linguistic development.  It is hoped that a student who successfully completes the entire sequence of the text will be able to use his/her German at the high-novice to (low) intermediate level.

The Lambuth bookstore sells the CDs and lab tapes that accompany the material in the lab manual.  These tapes will enable you to improve your listening comprehension, and they are necessary for completion of the exercises in the lab manual.  Wie geht’s  also includes a Student Listening CD to accompany the listening sections of the text.
