Course Description:        This course deals with the fundamental principles of management.  The five basic functions of management (planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling) are explored.  A business simulation is used as a team and learning project.  Students will apply these management principles to the functions of business in both the domestic and international environments.

Text:                             Management, Tenth Edition, by Robert Kreitner, Simulation booklet (in bookstore)

Make-up Policy: Make-up examinations will not be given.  You may drop your lowest score from the first four exams given during the semester.  The final will be comprehensive and required of all students.

OnLine Exercises:           Five online exercises are assigned for various chapters.  These are worth ten points each for a total of 50 points.  Some of the sites may simply ask you to investigate some of the information located at that site.  To make your search easier, the textbook has provided a student site on the internet.  It is located at the following address: college.hmco.com.  The first site is 1. Houghton Mifflin College Division.  Click on this site.  Then you will need to click on the following:  “students”, “Go to your course”, “Management”, and then scroll down to Kreitner, management 10e and click again.  There are several study aids located at this site. This is a business class.  Therefore, your answers to the exercises should be typed and double spaced.  Most likely one page will be sufficient to cover the exercise.  Exercises turned in late will receive marginal credit.

9/12: Exercise 1: Chapter 2, page 56.  Go to www.ceoexpress.com.  Under Businessweek, find a news article and summarize it.  Scroll down near the bottom of the page to find the currency exchange calculator (Under Office Tools and Travel).  Find the value of $3.00 U.S. dollars in Argentine currency.

9/19:  Exercise 2:  Chapter 4, page 118.  Go to ww.lonelyplanet.com.  Under DESTINATIONS, click on one of the following: Europe, Asia, Africa, etc.  Find some information on a country of your choice.  Be sure to include type of government, weather, culture & history.

9/28: Exercise 3: On the internet, find mission statements of two profit companies and one not-for-profit organization.  Print these out and turn them in.  Lambuth's mission statement will not count.

10/22: Exercise 4: See internet exercise 10-1 on page 348 of our book.  Follow the instructions and answer the questions under Learning Points.

11/16: Exercise 5: At YAHOO, type EIS Emotional Intelligence Test.  Click on Emotional Intelligence.  Take the EIS test and print your score. Turn in your score for credit.

ACE the Test                 At this student web site are multiple choice tests for each chapter.  One point will be given for submitting each test.  These tests should be taken online and emailed to me no later than the second class period for each chapter.  When asked for your name, put your name, a comma, your class section (1 or 2), and the chapter number (Faught,1,5 for Faught, section 1 and chapter 5).

Business Simulation:       About three weeks into the semester, students will be organized into teams of three or four.  These teams will compete with other teams in each of the two management classes.  Points for the business game will come from three areas.  These are team standing (both stock price and total earnings), peer evaluation, and a short quiz about the business simulation.  A total of 150 points is possible.

Attendance Policy:          Students are expected to attend all classes.  Students missing more than three classes will be reported to Mrs. McCoy.

Classroom demeanor:   Participation in class is encouraged.  If you have a question about the material, please speak up.  There is a good chance that many of your peers have the same question in mind.  After class starts, please avoid whispering to each other.  It distracts the instructor and other students sitting around you.  Leaving and returning in the same class period also causes a distraction.  Cell-phones are not allowed in class, unless they are turned off.  Inappropriate language will not be tolerated in class.  This is a G-rated class.  There are always ladies present and occasionally one or two gentlemen. These class disturbances can result in a lowering of your overall class grade.

No food or drinks will be allowed in the classroom.

On the day of each test, students should bring a pencil.  Scan cards and paper will be furnished.  Once a test is started, students may not leave the classroom for a restroom break.  Tests can be completed in one class setting and you should plan ahead for this inconvenience.

Learning Disabilities:     If you have a learning disability, please inform me after class.  It must be documented before I can consider making certain accommodations such as front row seating and tape recorders.

Academic Integrity:       Any form of cheating on examinations is strictly prohibited.  Students who either provide                                       or receive assistance from other students in regard to examinations will be given the                                   grade of “0” for that examination.  These students will also be reported to the Academic                                       Dean.  On test days you should plan on scattering out in the room.  In other words you                             may not get your favorite seat.

"Coercion of faculty to change grades is strictly prohibited; grade change requests must follow University established guidelines; refer to the Lambuth Handbook for details; any grade change must be supported by adequate and substantial documentation.  Lambuth University will not lessen its academic standards or the integrity of said standards for any reason."

“Lunch With The Pros: Two luncheons will be held this semester at 12:10 in the Hamilton Room of Wilder College Union.  Students attending both luncheons will receive 10 additional points added to their final point total.  These dates will be announced at a later time.
