Course
Description: Practical experience in recreation and sport management
through off-campus in-service with selected recreation or sport organizations.
Course
Objectives:
Students
will:
1.
demonstrate their ability to apply theories and principles
to specific organizational situations
2.
demonstrate a growing awareness of organization and
administrative structure, techniques, and procedures
3.
gain opportunities to work with others within the
organization, observe organizational dynamics, and attend important meetings
4.
demonstrate professional behavior
5.
display effective organizational and time management skills
6.
demonstrate creativity, initiative, responsibility,
self-confidence, and leadership skills
7.
evaluate themselves
in regard to the transition from a student to a professional.
Requirements:
1. A minimum of 120
hours (must be documented) of service to the recreation or sport organization
is required.
2. Complete
student self-evaluation and provide supervisor with evaluation forms.
3. Develop a
journal. The journal is a log detailing all activities and your evaluation of
those activities.
4. Final oral
and written report. This will include
all projects completed, your resume’ and cover letter, your self-evaluation and
organization supervisor’s evaluation, and summary of exit interviews. In addition, the journal will include descriptive materials that is representative of the agency
with which you are working. Such materials might include brochures, media
guides, fact sheets, newsletters, budgets, club/employee center profiles,
etc. Portfolio must be completed and
turned in on the final exam.
5. Request an
exit interview with your organization supervisor. (see above)
6. Prepare and
present a professional resume’ and cover letter.
Evaluation
Procedures: The intern will receive a letter grade for the internship.
Grades will be based on the following criteria:
1. Weekly report
emailed to the instructor.
2. Service hours
completed.
3. Final
Presentation (oral and portfolio)
4. Professional
resume’
5. Cover letter
Class Meeting
days – Note – although we will not meet
every week – you are required to submit your journals every week. It may be as an attachment or by snail mail. All
work MUST BE TYPED.
