Catalog Description:
An overview of the role of physical educators in the education of special students with emphasis on physical, emotion, social, and learning characteristics.
Course Overview:
This course will study the role of the adapted physical educator. The role of the adapted physical educator will with analyzed and the students will have the experience of playing this role. Through the means of physical education students will learn how to meet the needs of all student population groups.
Course Objectives
Required Text: Principles and Methods of Adapted Physical Education and Recreation (10th Edition). Auxter, Pyfer, & Huettig. McGraw Hill, 2005.
Educational Opportunities:
Through lectures, demonstrations, observation, discussions, problem-solving, field work, research and use of visual aids and other supplementary information, students will gain an understanding of adapting physical education to all population groups.
Evaluation & Grading:

Grading Scale- A = 90-100
B= 80-89
C= 70-79
D= 60-69

Student Responsibilites-
Student is responsible for attending all classes and participating in all class discussions and activities. Student is responsible for academic honesty. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, giving information to or receiving information from another individual or illegitimate source.
Attendance Policy:
A major who is taking this course may have only 3 unexcused absences. If you are late to class twice then it will count as an unexcused absence. All excused absences need to be personally taken up with the instructor.
Activity Guidelines:
This assignment has four major parts – needs assessment, develop of program, delivery of program and evaluation of program. The entire assignment is worth 200 points with each part worth 50 points.
A. Educational Needs Assessment Writeup (50 Points) Due: Feb. 13th

B. Development of Individual Education
Program (50 Points) Due: March 6th
Based on the educational needs assessment design an Individual Education Program (IEP). The IEP needs to include goals and one practice plan. The program needs to take into consideration the students’ present level of performance. To accompany the practice plan, there needs to be a write-up explaining how you have altered and adapted the practice plan to meet the needs of the student.
C. Delivery of IEP (50 Points) Due: March 27th
The designed IEP will be implemented with local school students. The purpose of the delivery will be to develop the students’ abilities and teach their skills related to your sport or activity. Meeting the students’ needs’ will be critical in order for a successful implementation of the plan.
D. Evaluation of IEP (50 Points) Due: April 17th
Begin a reflective process by analyzing the different stages of the IEP design. Did your IEP meet the students’ needs? Was your needs’ assessment accurate? How effective were your instructional strategies? What would you change for next time?
