Course Description: A study of lang= uage disorders as reflected in deficiencies of symbolization and syntax. This course applies the theories of child development, speech and hearing sci= ence, and language development to provide intervention for children and adults with la= nguage impairments. Clinical observations and participation required.

Purpose: This course is designed to prepare stude= nts in speech-language pathology to identify individuals with language disord= ers and delays.

Course Objectives: Through class participation, writt= en assignments, and examinations:     

1.  The student will demonstrate knowledge of structural components of language.

2.   The student will demonstrate= an understanding of normal and disordered language development.

3.   The student will demonstrate= a basic understanding of language disorders in children and adults.  The student will also learn how to integrate these students into the regular classroom.

4.   The student will demonstrate= a basic knowledge of related professionals that collaborate with a variety of disorders.

5.   The student will be able to discuss developmental norms and apply them to individual circumstances.<= /p>

Requirements:

1.   4 examination= s

2.   Students are required to obs= erve a minimum of 5 hours of language therapy in the speech and hearing Center. Should= the student not turn in the Shours of observation at the designated times, the student will lose 5 points off their total grade for each day that it is late= .

3.   Mid term pro= ject will consist of a developmental chart. More details later.

4.   The final project will be a brochure on a language disorder covered in class. Students will be able to= pick which topic they would like to research and present on.

 

Grading System:=

Points earned on each of the follo= wing tasks will be converted to percentages.

 

Four Examinations        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;        400 points

Five hours of observation        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;         5 points each

Class participation/ quizzes        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;      20 points

Final project            =             &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;     25 points

 

The following departmental grading scale will be used to compute your final grade:

A&= nbsp;           90= -100

B&= nbsp;           80= -89

C&= nbsp;           70= -79

D&= nbsp;           60= -69

F&= nbsp;            below 60

 

Attendance Poli= cy: Attendance is required in this class.  Stude= nts absent from class must obtain instructors approval prior to being allowed to make-up quizzed, assignments, tests, etc…. The instructor reserves the right to adjust the grade or refuse to accept late assignments.
