Course Description: A study of traditional and current approaches and instructional strategies for teaching preschool and school age learners with speech and language and hearing impairments. 

Purpose:  The purpose of this course is to introduce and provide the students with the basic principles of speech-language intervention and information reporting systems.  In addition, characteristics of and therapy strategies for specific communication disorders will be demonstrated.   

 

Course Objectives:  Through class participation, written assignments, and examinations:

 

1.      The student will understand cultural and linguistic factors that influence communication including language and culture, nonverbal communication, sign language and other manually coded systems, bilingualism and multicultural issues.   

2.      The student will demonstrate understanding of communication disorders and apply that understanding in carrying out treatment plans.

3.      The student will demonstrate knowledge and skills when implementing speech-language treatment plans and treatment protocols in the general education classroom and other settings.  They seek clarification from supervising speech-language pathologists as needed and demonstrate the use of feedback.

4.      The student will be able to identify and implement key teaching strategies, service delivery data collection techniques and demonstrate an understanding of the sequence of therapy targets in regards to the school setting and a collaborative team program.

5.      The student will demonstrate an understanding and implementation of specific intervention treatments of infants, children and adolescence that are specifically designed to address the unique characteristics of articulation and phonology, fluency, language, hearing impairment, voice, dysphasia, and apraxia of speech disorders. 

                

Course Assignments:

* Note:  All assignments: 3 points off for each day late.

1.   Two Examinations – In order to assess the students overall learning throughout     

      the term, mid-term and final exams will be given.

  1. Vocabulary/Content Quiz – Two quizzes will be given to assess students

knowledge and identification of  terminology and intervention strategies.  

  1. Students are required to write a Therapy Plan (including present levels, goals and objectives, and intervention programs).
  2. Students will be assigned one intervention method/technique and present a written summary and oral demonstration. 
  3. Each student will conduct a sample therapy session/lesson plan of given student including goals, procedures, materials, daily log sheet, and worksheets.
  4. Student will assemble a Therapy File containing sections of primary treatments for various communication disorders.  Therapy kit will include information, techniques, activities, and strategies for such areas as oral/motor skills, articulation, phonology, language intervention (vocabulary, syntax, etc), hearing impairments, auditory listening, fluency, voice, and an early picture file for vocabulary skills.  (Due on the last day of class).
  5. Students will observe scheduled speech and language therapy sessions and complete Appendix 1-A observation forms.  

      8.   Class participation and ATTENDANCE is mandatory for success.  Each class is

            worth one point per class.  (Two points off per missed class)

 

Grading Systems:  Points earned on each of the following tasks will be converted to percentages.

The following departmental grading scale will be used to compose your final grade:

          A                   90 - 100

   B                  80 – 89

   C                  70 – 79

   D                  60 – 69

          F                    Below 60

 

* Attendance Policy:  Attendance is required in this class.  Students absent from class must obtain instructors approval prior to being allowed to make-up quizzes, assignments, tests, etc...  The instructor reserves the right to adjust the grade or refuse to accept late assignment.
