EDU 4733  Teaching Secondary History (3 HRS)

Time: Thursday, 4:00-6:30  Room 217

 

Course Objective: To improve/prepare the student for the classroom, focusing on the areas of instruction, preparation and management.  Attention will be paid to the role of the teacher in teaching social studies, modeling Christian values in the classroom, as well as methods of researching, preparing and delivering instruction.

 

Role of the Student: To complete assigned readings and participate in discussions with the goals of learning the elements of the profession of teaching history and developing one’s own approach to this subject.  To complete observations, reflections, original lesson and unit plans and mini-presentations in order to practice and reflect on the skills needed to carry out effective instruction.

 

Role of the Instructor: To facilitate discussions on relevant issues concerning teaching history such as rationale, planning, practical elements of the profession, motivation and teaching strategies.  To assist students with research and reflection in preparing sample lesson plans, completing observations and minor research assignments.

 

Attendance: Attendance, participation and preparedness are essential elements for teaching effectively and thus are required for success in this class.  You must be present, punctual and prepared for this to be the meaningful and successful experience it should be. (Please note: Attendance and participation make up 20% of one’s grade). In addition, class attendance is necessary to understand and complete course requirements.  Responsibility and accountability go hand-in-hand with being a professional adult.

 

The Tennessee teacher licensure knowledge and skills addressed in this course include:

·        Demonstrate the basic process of the social sciences by posing questions,                 investigating, interpreting findings, communicating results, and making judgments based on evidence.

·        Evaluate the interrelationships among the social sciences and between the social sciences and humanities.

·        Infuse into the curriculum a wide variety of materials as well as human and technological resources, including primary documents and artifacts, texts, maps, graphs, charts, and other resources.

·        Understand peoples of other races and cultures and show respect for human diversity and for students’ varied talents and perspectives.

 

 

Course Assignments:

  • Participation in classroom discussions and activities.
  • Various assigned readings and minor written assignments from the text.
  • “Reflections” assignments assigned regularly on various educational topics and issues.
  • Two article reviews on relevant topics in the area of teaching social studies. Reviews must be two typed pages of summary and critical reflection and presented to the class on the assigned class session. (see calendar)
  • An original unit and lesson plan.  The student will be assigned a general subject (i.e. World History) and then will be allowed to choose a specific topic from which to develop a detailed unit and lesson plan and teach a mini-lesson (30 min.) to the class(see calendar).
  • A Final Examination (see calendar). The content for these exams will come from assigned readings, class discussions and practical assignments. The format will be at the discretion of the instructor. (Students will receive instructions and or a study guide to prepare at the appropriate time.)

 

 

 

Grading:

 

20% - Attendance/Participation in Discussions

30% - Classwork/Assignments/Journal Articles/Observation Reflections, Etc.

25% - Student Presentations: Lesson Plans (to include written and oral presentations, handouts etc. to accompany Unit and Lesson plans

25% - Final Examination
